First Week of Kindergarten

We had a very busy, productive, and fun first week of Kindergarten! We started our week off with reading The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. We learned what a prediction is and made predictions before reading. We then completed a Chester the Racoon craft and painted our handprints. I am very proud at how well our class followed the step by step directions to complete this craft.

We learned what a poetry notebook is and added our first poem to our notebook. This week we learned the popcorn sight word "I". We read our poem and highlighted two "I's" in our poem. We then illustrated our poem.

We also read the book, Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate. We discussed how we all got ready for Kindergarten. Then, we illustrated it on paper.

In math we have been counting to 100 and practicing writing our numbers.

In science we read the book, What is Science?, by Rebecca Kai
Dotlich. We learned about science and what a science notebook
is. We added our rules to our science notebook.

We made friendship salad this week. We discussed how important it is to be a good student and a good friend to others. As we added each fruit to our friendship salad, we pretended that each fruit represented something good; students that follow rules, students that listen, students that share, etc. I then went to add a rotten banana to our friendship, immediately our class recognized that this banana did not belong. We discussed behaviors that were unacceptable and decided since this banana did not belong in our friendship salad to throw it away.

Our third grade friends came to visit us. We had such a fun first week of Kindergarten!

I love your idea about the friendship salad and the rotten banana...if you don't mind, I'm totally going to borrow that idea and do it with my class. How cute! Thanks for posting!
